Furniture design update…

Posted on April 7, 2017

Following on from last months post, work has been progressing well on the Fuggles Beer Cafe project. In particular the furniture design.

RTW Construction have been busy building out the basement on site in Tonbridge.  The toilets and staff offices are slowly taking shape, with first fixings for lighting and plumbing going in over the next few weeks.  The public toilets were originally going to be a simple design, low cost, with little design input by Kook.  This has since changed and Kook have ended up doing design proposals for both the Ladies and Gents.

Fuggles owner Alex still wanted something simple and easy to construct, but he’s been swayed to explore alternative material options to add character to what would have been a painted white room.  The new material of choice was ply.

To avoid being too ‘Scandi’, which we felt would conflict with the rest of the project, we began to explore the option of staining and varnishing ply.  In an attempt to draw out the grain in the wood, the effects we achieved during these tests were amazing.  Something we will talk more about in a future post.

Back to the furniture design…

Rick from Kent Oak has been busy constructing the bar.  Most of the components are now ready for delivery to site for fitting later in the month.  Once the main structure of the bar has been fitted, the paint work will be touched up and the worktops fitted.  The seating side of the bar will be clad in an easy wipe material in case of any spillages.

Following up from a meeting with building control, it has been confirmed the entrance will require a lobby area.  Initially it was unknown whether this would be a requirement.  Now its been confirmed, Rick has taken on the challenge of making a lobby in the same style as the furniture design.  This will be constructed using the same method as the bar.  Each component part will be made in the workshop, before being pieced together on site.

We hope to be able to provide you with more imagery of the project coming together in the coming weeks.  Keep an eye on our Instagram feed and the blog for updates as and when they come.  Until then here’s some more images of Ricks workshop and the furniture design in construction.
